Metropolitan Council

Comments about this data source:
The Metropolitan Council provides a wide variety of reports, plans, maps, brochures, statistics, data, and expertise to the region's citizens and communities. Topics include land use planning and development, transportation, housing, environment, and parks and open space. Information is included about the following common socioeconomic characteristics identified by the MetroGIS community. Most data available in PDF and XLS format.

The Council produces four different types of data the meet socioeconomic information needs:

  • Estimates of current count population and households. (Note: household estimates may be more reliable that population estimates.)
  • Forecasts of population, households, and employment to 2030. (Notes: forecast and projection are synonymous; household forecasts may be more reliable than population forecasts.)
  • Transportation data in the Travel Behavior Inventory that provides region-level details about trip frequency, purpose, mode, etc.
  • Generalized land use interactive maps and tables that document the location of commercial and industrial land. The source data are also available.

Time Series:
These vary by source. TBI has been available since 1949, but only the more recent data is available in electronic form. Population estimates have been made since 1971. Only the most recent forecast data is relevant. Generalized land use is available since 1984.
