The department collects and distributes a significant amount of educational and social data; this social data sometimes can be a good indicator of community dynamics. Data is in XLS format. In many cases, data is available at the school and school district level by grade level. Test scores are available for public and private schools.

More detailed data is collected by local school districts, but this data is not easily acquired. Data about minors is protected by state law. Under certain circumstances, the districts may provide summary statistics for a fee. Access to raw data is possible, but researchers must be clear about their intentions and submit formal a formal proposal for review and approval. There are 59 school districts in the Metro area.
The Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) is conducted every three years by the state Departments of Health, Education, and others. That survey asks students in grades 6, 9, and 12 about about activities, experiences, and behaviors. Topics covered include tobacco, alcohol and drug use, school climate, physical activity, violence and safety, connections with school and family, health, and other topics. Summary results by county are available online in PDF format, but can be obtained in other formats by contacting the department directly. Independent School Districts may be willing to share their results.
