Economic Census

Comments about this data source:
Produced by the US Census Bureau based on a survey of businesses. The Economic Census reports establishments, sales, receipts, revenues, shipments, payroll, and employment by industry. It also includes results of the Surveys of Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises, though only to the city and county level. As of 1997, nearly all sectors of the economy were included in the Economic Census. Data are collected every five years by the Census Bureau via a sample survey, in years ending in 2 and 7, and reported after a 2-3 year time lag. Resolution is as fine as ZIP-code area, but data is suppressed when information might be disclosed about an individual firm.

Time Series:
First Economic Census was 1954. Online data from 1992 forward.
