Lineage SOURCE:

1990 Washington County Geological Atlas.

PROCESSING STEPS:

-Data for the Atlas were collected during 1990 field surveys in Washington County. The Atlas maps were first produced on a paper medium.

-The bedrock topography information/linework was extracted from a mylar sheet using a scanner;

-Next, label points were added to the polygon coverage, and polygon and line coverage were created.

Notes: The Minnesota Geological Society used PC ARC/INFO for digitizing and building the coverage. Washington County has since converted the coverage to an ArcView shapefile, and;

converted the Bedrock Topography coverage coordinates from UTM, GRS80, Zone 15, with a y-shift equal to 4700000 to the Washington County coordinate system The county has also retained a copy of the dataset in its original UTM coordinates.

description c 30
mgscode n 6

type: polygon type code. Codes used in covers are as follows:

CODE Description

BT.....................Bedrock Topography

gcm_code: geographic coordinate method code. Geographic coordinates for the point were determined, hence implies the accuracy of the lines. Note that the accuracy of coordinates determined by measuring the location of lines drawn on a map (either by digitizing or manual methids) area affected mainly by the skill of the person drawing the line on the map rather than the limitations of the map itself or the digitizing equipment and process. Since it is difficult to assign an error to that part of the coordinate determination process, the accuracy estimates indicated below for digitizing reflect the combined error of the map (assuming National Map Accuracy Standards) and a digitizing table with a + 0.005 inch accuracy rating. The geographic method codes used in covers are:

TYPE DESCRIPTION

B.............digitized- scale 1:100000 to 1:24000- accuracy 25 to 90 meters (+/- 83 to 296 feet)
D.............digitized- scale unknown (refers to US Census Tiger File county borders)

geog_src: Geographic coordinate source code. Indicates who (which organization or project) determined the geographic coordinates.

geoc_date: the date the coordinates for the lines were determined. Format yyyymmdd.

utme_lab: the UTM easting coordinate of the polygon label point.

utmn_lab: the UTM northing coordinate of the polygon label point (value shifted -4700000.

utm_zone: the UTM zone for which the coordinates of the lines are calculated. All Minnesota points by convention should be Zone 15 (zone 15 is extended to cover the entire state to simplify plotting and maintenance).

cint (BTPG only): elevation interval of bedrock surface in feet above sea level. Shows the range of values between contour lines.

description: Description of polygon as listed in field unit_code. Please refer to the Washington County Atlas, Plate 6 for a complete description of how the pollution sensitivity units were determined and guides to their use.

Polygon coverage, BTPG, was also built as a line cover, and containes the following additional item in BTPG.AAT:

ITEM NAME TYPE WIDTH DECIMAL

clev n 6

clev: Value of contour line- bedrock elevation in feet above mean sea level.

CODE DESCRIPTION

MGS.............Minnesota Geological Survey
TIGER..........US Census Tiger Files

mgscode: internal code used at Minnesota Geological Survey.
