| Abstract | As one of seven coverages for the Washington County Digital Geological Atlas, this dataset represents a Bedrock Geology polygon coverage in an ArcView shapefile format. The Minnesota Geological Society produced the Washington County Geological Atlas in 1990, and subsequently extracted the information from these maps in 1995 to produce the digital version that this one of seven datasets represents. |

| Lineage | SOURCE: 1990 Washington County Geological Atlas. PROCESSING STEPS: -Data for the Atlas were collected during 1990 field surveys in Washington County. The Atlas maps were first produced on a paper medium. -The bedrock geology information was extracted from the paper map copy using a digitizer; -Next, label points were added and a polygon coverage was created. Notes: The Minnesota Geological Society used PC ARC/INFO for digitizing and building the coverage. Washington County has since converted the coverage to an ArcView shapefile, and; converted the Bedrock Geology coverage coordinates from UTM, GRS80, Zone 15, with a y-shift equal to 4700000, to the Washington County coordinate system The county has also retained a copy of the dataset in its original UTM coordinates. |

| Entity and Attribute Overview | Coverage and Attribute Information for the Bedrock Geology Dataset: COVER NAME DESCRIPTION (COVERAGE TYPE) BGPG....................Bedrock Geology (polygon) Field Definitions and Attribute Codes for polygon cover BGPG. ITEM NAME TYPE WIDTH DECIMAL type c 2 gcm_code c 3 geoc_src c 5 geoc_date n 8 utme_lab n 6 utmn_lab n 7 utm_zone n 2 description c 30 mgscode n 6 type: polygon type code. Codes used in covers are as follows: CODE Description BG.....................Bedrock Geology gcm_code: geographic coordinate method code. Geographic coordinates for the point were determined, hence implies the accuracy of the lines. Note that the accuracy of coordinates determined by measuring the location of lines drawn on a map (either by digitizing or manual methids) area affected mainly by the skill of the person drawing the line on the map rather than the limitations of the map itself or the digitizing equipment and process. Since it is difficult to assign an error to that part of the coordinate determination process, the accuracy estimates indicated below for digitizing reflect the combined error of the map (assuming National Map Accuracy Standards) and a digitizing table with a + 0.005 inch accuracy rating. The geographic method codes used in covers are: TYPE DESCRIPTION B.............digitized- scale 1:100000 to 1:24000- accuracy 25 to 90 meters (+/- 83 to 296 feet) D.............digitized- scale unknown (refers to US Census Tiger File county borders) geog_src: Geographic coordinate source code. Indicates who (which organization or project) determined the geographic coordinates. geoc_date: the date the coordinates for the lines were determined. Format yyyymmdd. utme_lab: the UTM easting coordinate of the polygon label point. utmn_lab: the UTM northing coordinate of the polygon label point (value shifted -4700000. utm_zone: the UTM zone for which the coordinates of the lines are calculated. All Minnesota points by convention should be Zone 15 (zone 15 is extended to cover the entire state to simplify plotting and maintenance). for bedrock geology, the codes are as follows: CODE DESCRIPTION ODCR...................Decorah Shale OPGW..................Platteville and Glenwood Formations OSTP...................St. Peter Sandstone OPDC...................Prairie du Chien Group CJDN....................Jordan Sandstone CSLF....................St. Lawrence Formation-Franconia Formation CFIG.....................Ironton and Galesville Sandstones CECR....................Eau Claire Formation CMTS....................Mt. Please refer to the Washington County Atlas, Plate 6 for a complete description of how the pollution sensitivity units were determined and guides to their use. CODE DESCRIPTION MGS.............Minnesota Geological Survey TIGER..........US Census Tiger Files mgscode: internal code used at Minnesota Geological Survey. |
