Metadata Summary

Originator Metropolitan Council
Abstract The Major Shopping Centers point data file includes those centers with more than 26,000 gross square feet of retail space, open as of December 31, 1998. It does not include single, 'big - box' retail stores sited alone.

Note: The point data is positioned for cartographic purposes for the Metropolitan Council's published Major Shopping Centers In the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area map (Publication No. 74-00-035) and not for precise location (e.g. the points might not fall on the actual shopping center).

Purpose This dataset was developed to update the 1990 Major Shopping Centers In the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, 1939-1971, 1972-1984, 1985-1989 map published by the Metropolitan Council in the early 1990s, which was published as part of the Shopping Centers and Retail Sales report series. Only the map was updated, not the report.

Attribute Accuracy Unknown
Logical Consistency The dataset is topologically 'clean'.
Completeness Entire seven county geographic area is covered.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy The positional accuracy of the dataset has not been tested under the National Standards for Spatial Data Accuracy.

The shopping center point locations were derived from a list of addresses that had some problems when address matched to street centerlines. Some addresses were modified to improve address matching results.

Some of the resulting points were repositioned for cartographic purposes and labeling for the published Major Shopping Centers map (Publication No. 74-00-035). Thus, some of the points, especially in major shopping center areas, are not in their precise location (e.g. the points might not fall on the actual shopping center).
Lineage The Metropolitan Council research staff developed a database of shopping centers with ID numbers, addresses, gross square footage, year of construction, year renovated, and center type (regional, sub-regional, etc.) from the sources listed below. Not all of these attributes were carried through to the final point data file.

This database was address matched with ArcView 3.2 using the TLG Street Centerlines dataset. Some of the addresses were modified during this process to achieve better address matching results. Some of the resulting points were then repositioned for cartographic purposes for the published Major Shopping Centers map (Publication No. 74-00-035). Some of the points, especially in major shopping center locations, are not in their precise location (e.g. the points might not fall on the actual shopping center).
