School Districts (Derived from Parcel Boundaries)

Metadata Summary

Originator Metropolitan Council (from County Parcel Data)
Abstract The dataset represents the boundaries of all public school districts in 1999-2000 school year. The dataset is derived from the school district attribute collected by the county assessors and the parcel boundary data from each county in the 7-county metro area (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington).

Notes:
- Actual school district boundaries do not necessarily follow parcel boundaries. Thus, this dataset should be considered an approximation of the actual school district boundaries.
- In some places discontiguous parcels were coded as islands of one school district within another school district. Where these parcels appeared to have no structure on them (e.g. no building value) or where they could be determined to be tax-exempt property, they were changed to be the same as the surrounding school district. Where such islands of school district appeared to be residential parcels or otherwise appeared to have a building of some sort on them, the were left as islands of one school district within another. No efforts have been made to verify the school district status of any of these parcels with the county assessors' offices.

Time Period of Content Date 04/2000
Currentness Reference Reflects all school district boundary corrections and consolidations completed as of the Time Period of Content date.

Parcel data was requested by the Council from each of the 7 counties dated April 2000 to coincide with the Census.

Parcels for Carver, Dakota, Ramsey, and Washington Counties were received by the Council in April 2000. Anoka and Hennepin Counties were received by the Council in 6/2000. Scott County parcels were received in 8/2000.

Section 2 Data Quality Information Top of full metadata Top of page
Attribute Accuracy Unknown
Logical Consistency The dataset is topologically 'clean'.
Completeness Entire seven county geographic area is covered.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy The school district boundaries are aligned along county parcel boundaries. The horizontal positional accuracy of these boundaries varies significantly by county. Metadata, where available, for county parcel data can be viewed at the MetroGIS DataFinder web sight at www.datafinder.org.
Lineage 1999-2000 School Districts were dissolved in ArcView from each of the county parcel dataset shape files based on the school district identifier attribute. Then school district boundaries were heads-up digitized on these dissolved shape files, snapping the dissolved files. Where lakes and rights-of-way intersected school district boundaries, the lines were drawn across these features. School district boundaries that bordered road rights-of-way were drawn along one side of those rights-of-way.

In some places discontiguous parcels were coded as islands of one school district within another school district. No efforts have been made to verify any of these parcels with the county assessor's offices.
