Abstract This table contains information about service areas for independent public transit authorities, each of which has been designated by the Minnesota State Legislature as the transit provider within each service area. Agencies represented include the Metropolitan Council (Metro Transit operating division and Metropolitan Transportation Services contracting division) and each Suburban Transit Authority Provider (previously known as 'opt-outs').

These service areas are defined by complete cities or townships within a county (some cities are cut along county boundaries). Information is geographically references with the COCTU_CODE field (concatenation of 3-digit FIPS county code and 5-digit FIPS place code (CTU code)).

Purpose This table can be joined to the 'Counties and Cities & Townships, Twin Cities Metropolitan Area' spatial dataset using the COCTU_CODE field (concatenation of 3-digit FIPS county code and 5-digit FIPS place code). This will allow users to create maps and conduct spatial analyses with the data in this table.

COCTU_CODE: 8-digit code that uniquely defines every city or township within  
each county. This is a concatenation of the 3-digit FIPS and MN
state standard county code and the 5-digit FIPS 'Place' code
(which is also a Census Bureau and MetroGIS standard code for
cities, townships and unorganized territories (CTUs)).
