| Title | Major Highways | |||
| Abstract | This layer contains single lines representing the major highways in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The lines are derived from the Functional Class Roads layer (also developed by the Metropolitan Council) and the Lawrence Group street centerline shapefile. Attributes include road name, type, highway number, and a code defining interstate highways (Y/N).
NOTES: This layer is intended to be used just to show the major highways for reference and cartographic purposes. Since divided highways are represented with just one centerline, there are accuracy and scale limitations for using this layer. Major highways were included if they met one of the following criterion: 1) An Interstate or U.S. Highway or 2) A State Highway or County Road AND classified as a Principal Arterial by the Council's Functional Class Roads Layer
| Purpose | This layer is intended for use as a cartographic element to represent major highways on small scale maps of 1:50,000 or higher. The ArcGIS layer file included with this shapefile also has embedded properties which allow the user to label the major highways with the appropriate highway shields using dynamic labels. | |||

| Section 2 | Data Quality | |||
| Attribute Accuracy | Data attributes were entered and checked by Metropolitan Council GIS staff.
Major Highway Names were double-checked for consistency with the TLG Street Centerline Layer.
| Logical Consistency | The dataset is topologically 'clean'. | |||
| Completeness | Entire seven county geographic area is covered. | |||
| Horizontal Positional Accuracy | Positional accuracy varies throughout the dataset. For undivided highways, most line work in most counties falls within the road right of way, often near the center. For divided highways, all attempts were made to ensure the centerline fell between the two directional sections of the roadway. See the metadata on TLG Street Centerlines for comments about the positional accuracy of that dataset, which was used as a reference layer for this layer. | |||
| Lineage | To create this dataset, the principal arterials from the latest functional class roads layer, the 2000 Digital Ortho Photographs, and the TLG Street Centerline layer were used as a backdrop for aligning major highway centerlines. For divided highways, a single line was centered between the directional halves, using heads-up digitizing, usually at a scale of 1:5000 or 1:10,000 . For undivided highways, TLG Street Centerlines were traced. No ramps were included, and major highway intersections were represented by simplified splits to facilitate cartographic representations on small scale maps. | |||

| Overview | LINE ATTRIBUTES:
ISTATE: Boolean Y/N value for Interstates, used for display. TYPE: Interstate, US Highway, State Highway, or County Road. HWY_N: Number (and letter) designation of the major highway, ie "35W". Used for labeling with Highway Shields NAME: Concatenation of the previous two fields, ie "US Highway 61". Used for traditional labeling and identification.
