Metadata Summary

Originator Metropolitan Council, DNR
Abstract This dataset is a hydrologically correct 10 meter digital elevation model of the seven county Twin Cities metropolitan area. ''Hydrologically Corrected'' means that the DEM was adjusted to accurately depict surface water drainage, even when the drainage is in underground storm sewers, etc. In some places this DEM will be very different than a normal height-of-land DEM.

Title Hydrologically Corrected 10 Meter Digital Elevation Model
Abstract This dataset is a hydrologically correct 10 meter digital elevation model of the seven county Twin Cities metropolitan area. ''Hydrologically Corrected'' means that the DEM was adjusted to accurately depict surface water drainage, even when the drainage is in underground storm sewers, etc. In some places this DEM will be very different than a normal height-of-land DEM.
Purpose To develop a digital elevation model that accurately reflects surface water drainage in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Time Period of Content Date 1980
Currentness Reference Base information is as current as the publication of its source USGS quadrangle maps which vary in publication date from 1979 to 1990, and the DNR lakes and stream database, assembled from various sources (MNDOT base map, DLG, DRQ and WMO subsurface drainage data).

Attribute Accuracy This dataset is a grid file with elevation as the only attribute. The accuracy of this attribute is discussed under the topic of vertical position accuracy in this metadata file.
Logical Consistency The data are topologically correct and verified
Completeness The dataset is complete for the 89 USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Positional accuracy for areas derived from 7.5 minute quads cannot be assumed to exceed National Map Accuracy Standards for 1:24,000 scale maps (+/- 40 feet).
Vertical Positional Accuracy Vertical accuracy for areas derived from 7.5 minute quads cannot be assumed to exceed National Map Accuracy Standards for 1:24,000 scale maps with 10-foot elevation contours (+/- 5 feet).
Lineage TOPOGRID processing was performed on digital elevation contours to derive the hydrologically correct elevation model MCDEM. DLG derived contours, depression points, lakes, and streams were used as input for the process.

Datatype contour (UPLNDLN, item elev1)
Tolerances used: 5, Horizontal error 1, Vertical error 1
Margin 1
Enforce on
Sink TGSINK
Lake TGLAKE
Stream TGSTRM

Lake surface elevations were calculated as zonal minimums of surface elevations for each lake. The resulting output is in a floating point grid, with units of feet. One DEM (USGS quad 3725) was generated with point elevation data from a level 1 DEM with 30-m cells. Contours and sink inputs were absent for this quad.

The following layers were used in or resulted from the processing:
TGSTRM, streams input for processing,
TGSINK, depression elevation points used as input, no sink depth value defined,
TGLAKE, lakes input,
UPLNDLN, elevation contours
LK_MASK, lake surface elevations
MCDEM_CM, integer elevation values in centimeters
MCDEM_FT, integer elevation values in feet
Regional DEM MCDEM_FT was divided into 9 watershed DEMs:
MCDEM1 - Mississippi River, St. Cloud Watershed (Clearwater and Elk River)
MCDEM2 - Crow River Watershed
MCDEM3 - South Fork Crow River Watershed
MCDEM4 - Rum River Watershed
MCDEM5 - Mississippi River, Twin Cities Watershed
MCDEM6 - Lower Minnesota River Watershed
MCDEM7 - Lower St. Croix River Watershed
MCDEM8 - Rush-Vermillion River Watershed
MCDEM9 - Cannon River Watershed
Source Scale Denominator 24000
